Leve het internet! Dankzij deze uitvinding konden we tegelijkertijd met een Belgische artiest en een Zweedse muzikante praten. Het is ook dankzij de draadloze verbinding dat Gabriella Aström en Jean-Marc Lederman elkaar vonden en als Invisible Sky verder door het leven gingen. De eerste ep verscheen op Wool-E Discs, hier is het verhaal…
Hallo. Jean-Marc woont in Brussel en Gabriella is van Zweden, is Invisible Sky via het internet tot stand gekomen?
Gabriella: Het is een combinatie van een menselijke ontmoeting en internetverbinding. Maar we hebben elkaar nog nooit ontmoet in het echte leven.
JM: Nou, het is nauwelijks zeldzaam vandaag. Het begon met een nummer, dan met twee en op de een of andere manier werden we meegesleept omdat we beiden de synergie van onze muzikale samenwerking waardeerden.
En blijft het een studioproject of ben je van plan om meer te doen na de release van deze ep, zoals optredens of zo?JM: Nu is het inderdaad een studioproject, maar ik denk dat als de gelegenheid zich voordoet we meer kunnen samenwerken. We zijn van plan om ooit een album op te nemen.
Ik denk dat je het met me eens bent, Jean-Marc, dat je in de underground een cultlegende bent, maar met elke release, of beter gezegd met ieder project, lijkt het alsof je vanaf nul begint. Was Invisible Sky weer een nieuw begin?JM: Weet je, wie je ook bent en wat mensen ook van je denken, je moet nog steeds op de proppen komen met iets en in ons geval zijn dat songs die een warme plek in ons hart moeten vinden en daarna in het hart van andere mensen. Dat is altijd hard werken. Dus, ja, elke uitdaging is anders en daardoor elk project ook anders, ook al schrijf ik voor mijn partner in crime. En Invisible Sky is inderdaad een nieuw begin: het bouwt zijn eigen kleine sonisch universum op.
Gabriella, toen je met Jean-Marc begon te werken, wist je wat hij in het verleden deed?Gabriella: Nee, ik wist het niet. Ik zat gewoon te denken, “Oh, dit is spannend. Deze kerel wil met mij werken.” Hmmm, ja, ik zal het maar doen. Als het werkt dan werkt het. Voor dit project heb ik nog nooit samen met iemand iets geschreven, mijn faalangst begon van binnen te borrelen, maar ik besloot toch om er voor te gaan! Het was een goede beslissing.
Jean-Marc, ik denk dat het Gabriellas stem was die je overweldigde om met haar te gaan werken, niet?
JM: Absoluut, ik viel voor haar stem, maar ook voor haar positieve houding. Het is misschien wel een online werkrelatie, maar ik moet het ook nog goed voelen en dat is het geval.
En het werkproces, hoe gebeuren de dingen? Is dat als een 50/50 deal van ideeën?
Gabriella: Jean-Marc stuurt me een nummer. We praten een beetje over de emotie die het lied moet hebben en dan schrijf ik teksten en neem thuis de zang op. Ik stuur het terug naar Jean-Marc en hij vertelt me wat hij ervan denkt. Tot nu toe kreeg ik goede respons op de songs.
JM: Ja, ik kom met het eenvoudige muzikale skelet en als de stemming het toelaat, vult Bella dat met haar creativiteit aan, dan wordt het nummer realiteit. Ze zingt op de muzikale demo, Ik produceer en schik het wat en als ze ervan houdt is dat het eindresultaat.
Gabriellas sublieme stem en Jean-Marcs elektronica, het lijkt wel een perfect huwelijk. Ik denk dat je het niet erg zal vinden dat ik het als perfecte pop zie (persoonlijk zat ik te denken aan Saint Etienne en Sneaker Pimps). Op een bepaalde manier hoor ik zelfs jaren ’90 trip hop. Niet dat daar iets mis mee is, of ligt het gewoon aan mij?JM: Je kunt je invloeden nooit volledig wissen en persoonlijk hou ik van de perfecte elektronische pop uit de jaren 90 van William Orbit. Natuurlijk vond ik St Etienne en Sneaker Pimps ook goed en dat hoor je waarschijnlijk. Maar ik ben ook erg geneigd om dream pop en zelfs drone muziek te mixen in wat ik doe, dus ik denk dat Invisible Sky een samenvatting is van alle dingen die ik in mijn carrière gehoord heb, samen met Gabriella. Trip hop? Kan hoor!
Gabriella, je bent heel populair bij de synthpopliefhebbers met je band Me The Tiger. Enig idee hoe de fans reageren op Invisible Sky?Gabriella: Hmmm. Ik heb nog niets gehoord, dus ik denk dat dit een positieve reactie is.
De EP is uitgebracht op Wool-E discs, een label dat zich profileert door nieuw talent de kansen te geven die ze nodig heeft. Waarom koos je om met Dimitri te werken?JM: Ik moet werken met mensen die van de muziek houden en Dimitri van Wool-E kwam als een fan, een vriend, niet als een zakenman.

Long live the Internet! Thanks to this invention we were able to talk with a Belgian artist and a Swedish musician at the same time. It is also thanks to the wireless connection Gabriella Aström and Jean-Marc Lederman found each other and formed Invisible Sky. The first EP is released on Wool-E Discs, here’s the story …
Hello. Jean-Marc lives in Brussels and Gabriella is from Sweden, was Invisible Sky created on the internet?
Gabriella: it´s a combination of human encounter and internet connection. But we have never met in real life.
JM: Well, it’s hardly rare these days but yes. We started one song, then two and got somehow carried away as we both appreciated the synergy of our musical collaboration.
In fact, is this a studio project or are you planning to do more after the release of this EP like playing gigs or so?JM: it started as a studio project only, but I guess if an opportunity arises we could eventually team up live, but for now a studio project only. We plan to do an album sometimes .
I guess you agree, Jean-Marc, that in the underground you’re something of a cult legend, but with every release, or better said project, it seems like you’re starting from scratch all over again. Was Invisible Sky like another new beginning?JM: You know, whoever you are and whatever people think you are, you still need “to come up with the goods” and in our case, songs that find a warm place in our hearts, first, then in people’s heart. And that is always hard work. So, yes, every encounter is different and so every project is different as I really write for my partner in crime. And Invisible Sky is that for me: something that starts at zero and builds up its own little sonic universe.
Gabriella, when you started working with Jean-Marc, were you aware of the fact of what he did in the past?Gabriella: No I was not. I was just thinking, “oh, this is exiting. This dude wants to work with me. Hmmm, yes, I´ll do it. If it works it works. Before this project I haven´t written something with anyone so my performance anxiety started to bubble inside but I decided to go for it! It was a good decision.
Jean-Marc, I guess it was Gabriella’s voice that overwhelmed you to start working with her, no?JM: Totally, I fell for her voice, but also her positive attitude. It might be an online working relationship but I personally need to feel welcome.
And about the working process, how do things happen? Is it like a 50/50 deal if it comes to blending ideas?
Gabriella: Jean-Marc sends me a music track. We talk a little about the emotion the song should have and then I write lyrics and record vocals in my home. I send it back to Jean-Marc and he can tell me what he thinks. So far I´ve got good response on my first draft for the songs.
JM: Yes, I come up with a basic music skeleton and if the mood pleases Bella triggers her creativity, the song becomes a reality. She sings on what is a musical demo, I produce and arrange the track and if she likes the end result, it’s a wrap !
It seems like a perfect marriage, Gabriella’s sublime voice and Jean-Marc’s electronics.I guess you have nothing about the fact that in a way it sounded like well…perfect pop (personally I was thinking about Saint Etienne and Sneaker Pimps). In a way I heard a 90s trip hop sound as well. Not that there’s something wrong with that, or is it just me?JM: You cannot really totally erase all your influences and I personally was very endeared with William Orbit’s perfect electronic pop of the 90’s so it surely does come out here. Of course I liked St Etienne and Sneaker Pimps as well, so you can probably feel it coming through. But i’m also very inclined to mix dreampop and even drone music in what I do so I think Invisible Sky is pretty much a resumé of all the things I’ve heard in my career going through a morphing process with what Gabriella brings to the (mixing) table. Trip hop ? Maybe !
Gabriella, you are quite popular in the synthpop genre with Me The Tiger. Any idea how your fans react to Invisible Sky?Gabriella: Hmmm.. I haven’t heard anything not good so I guess thats a positive response.
The EP is released on Wool-E Discs, a label that profiles itself by giving new talent the opportunities they need. Why did you choose to work with them?JM: I need to work with people I think love the music we release and Dimitri of Wool-E came as a fan, a friend and not as a businessman.
