“Aha, de zomer is begonnen…waar heb ik mijn zwemshort en surfboard weer gelaten?”. Met dat herkenbare en vrolijke gevoel verlaat je de zaal na een optreden van Best Coast.
Deze Californische band bestaat uit “all American girl” en tevens zangeres/gitariste Bethany Cosentino en multi-instrumentalist Bobb Bruno.
Beide stichtende leden laten zich voor hun live optredens bijstaan door Brett Mielke op basgitaar, Brady Miller op slagwerk en sinds kort ook Joe Bautista op gitaar en keyboard.
Cosentino, die ook een verleden heeft als kindsterretje in allerlei reclamefilmpjes, was al op vroege leeftijd terug te vinden in de L.A muziekscene. Ze werd beïnvloed door o.a folklegendes Joni Mitchell en Joan Baez, maar om het nodige contrast te leggen blijkbaar ook door punkbands zoals Weezer en Blink-182. Op 15 jarige leeftijd begon ze zelf teksten te schrijven en in 2006 zat ze even in de psychedelische droneband Pocahaunted waar ze producer Bobb Bruno leerde kennen. Na een kortstondige en vroegtijdig opgegeven studie journalistiek in het voor haar véél te koude Brooklyn keerde ze in 2009 terug richting Golden State om zich opnieuw aan haar oude liefde muziek te wijden.
Samen met oude bekende Bobb Bruno richtte ze vervolgens “Best Coast” op. Lo-fi singles met een vaak erg wazige sound (o.a Sun was high and so was I en When I’m with you) werden ingeblikt in Bobb’s studio en kwamen via omzwervingen op het internet onder de aandacht van mensen uit de muziekindustrie.
Enige tijd later in 2010 volgde debuutalbum “Crazy for you” met op de cover Beth’s fotogenieke kat “Snacks” en tal van verwijzingen naar Californië. De sound van dit album was kenmerkend lo-fi, de deuntjes zonnig, maar de teksten vaak erg emotioneel. Het genre leunde aan bij de 60’s garage rock en surf pop, en met een zang die liet terugdenken aan girl bands zoals de Shangri La’s.
In 2012 kwam tweede album “the only place” uit dat meer country-invloeden had en misschien daarom door sommige fans een beetje teleurstellend werd bevonden.
Het derde album dat zeer recent op 4 mei verschenen is probeert echter een middenweg te zoeken, en is naar mijn mening tot nu toe dan ook het beste.

De zo kenmerkende zomerse sfeer waarvoor Best Coast bekend staat werd ook tijdens het optreden in een volle Badaboum te Parijs gebracht. Een ruime set van 19 nummers werd gebracht en er was gezorgd voor een mooie mix uit alledrie de albums. Op die manier was er een mooier afwisseling tussen punky en noisy popsongs (“Heaven sent”), surfpop (“Boyfriend”), en ook enkele emotionelere nummers met de nodige “oe-oe-oe’s” (“No one like you”) kwamen aan bod. Een goede luisteraar hoort niet alleen de lieflijke, soms aanstekelijk klagende stem van Cosentino maar merkt al gauw dat de teksten in haar heartbreak ballads vaak gaan over verloren liefde en “teen angst”. En ook de talrijke verwijzingen naar haar geliefde Californië zijn nooit ver weg in de lyrics. Pijn wordt bij haar blijkbaar voortdurend afgewisseld met plezier.
De stem en het uiterlijk van Bethany geven misschien een lieflijke indruk, maar de twijfel bestaat of ze dat in werkelijkheid ook is. In bepaalde nummers (bvb. “I don’t know how”) begint ze wel heel lief en girly, maar gaat ze na het eerste couplet over in punky ritmes die een behoorlijk tempo hebben. En ook het woordje “fuck” is in bindteksten niet vreemd voor Cosentino.
Ook muzikaal zit deze band live uitstekend in mekaar voor de liefhebber van dit genre. De muzikanten zijn goed op mekaar ingespeeld. De baslijnen eenvoudig maar erg goed en meeslepend, en de gitaren bezwerend en variërend tussen noise, pop, rock en surf. Het is trouwens een plezier om vooral Bobb Bruno te zien opgaan in zijn gitaarspel, vaak over en weer schuddend met zijn hoofd op de tonen van de muziek. Hij geeft je ook de indruk dat voor hem alles goed is, zolang hij maar gitaar kan spelen.
De toppers van dit optreden waren zeker “Heaven sent”, “Feeling OK” en oudje “Crazy for you”, maar ook een erg mooie versie van “California Nights”. Het galmeffect liet je hoofd haast tollen. En ook een bijzondere intro van het (helaas) enige bisnummer “Boyfriend” werd prachtig gebracht.
Soms wordt in de pers kritisch gewezen op het feit dat de lyrics van Bethany’s songs wel erg eenvoudig en weinig hoogstaand zijn. Maar hey, als ik hoogstaande proza wil lezen, dan neem ik wel een goed boek of een dichtbundel bij de hand. Ik geniet minstens even graag van simpele maar leuke poppy tunes en teksten die mij aan mijn eigen wilde jaren doen terugdenken. En dat kan Best Coast mij geven!
Tenslotte nog 1 tip: koop Best Coast hun laatste CD, zet het volume op 10 in je wagen en je waant je in een Ford Mustang Convertible in een weids Californisch landschap. Doen!

Ah, summer has started … where did I leave my shorts and surfboard? ” . That’s the familiar and joyfull feeling you will experience leaving the venue after a performance of surf rock duo Best Coast .
This Californian band consists of ” All American Girl ” and also singer / guitar player Bethany Cosentino and multi – instrumentalist Bobb Bruno.
Both founding members are assisted in their live performances by Brett Mielke on bass , Brady Miller on drums and recently Joe Bautista on guitar and keyboard.
Cosentino, who also has a past as a child star in commercials, has been around the LA music scene at an early age. She was influenced by folk legends like Joni Mitchell and Joan Baez , as well as by punk bands such as Weezer and Blink -182 (what a contrast) . At age 15 , she started to write lyrics and in 2006 she was briefly in psychedelic drone band Pocahaunted where she met producer Bobb Bruno. She has been studying journalism in Brooklyn, NY (a city much too cold for a Californian girl) but returned back to the Golden State in 2009 to rededicate herself to her beloved music .
Along with old friend Bobb Bruno she then founded “Best Coast”. Lo-fi singles with an often very hazy sound (including “Sun was high, and so was I” and “When I’m with you”) were recorded in Bobb’s studio and by means of the Internet they got attention of some music industry people and label managers.
Some time later, in 2010, they released debut album “Crazy for You” with Beth’s photogenic cat “Snacks” on the cover and numerous references to California. The sound of this album was particular lo-fi and filled with sunny tunes, but the lyrics were often very emotional. The style was that of 60’s garage rock and surf pop, and with a voice that reminded of girl groups like the Shangri La’s.
In 2012 came the sophomore album “The only place” which had somehow more country influences and was therefore perhaps a little disappointing for some of the fans.
Third album “California Nights” was recently released on the 4th of May. It took the best of both worlds, and is therefore in my opinion the best of all three.
This typical summery atmosphere where Best Coast is known for was present during the performance in the crowded Badaboum venue in Paris. A nice set of 19 songs was brought and there was a good mix in tracks from all three albums. In that way there was a satisfying alternation between punky and noisy pop songs (“Heaven sent”), surfpop (“Boyfriend”), as well as some of the more emotional songs with lots of “ooh-ooh-oohs” (“No One Like You”). A good listener not only hears the sweet, catchy and sometimes plaintive voice of Cosentino but will soon notice that the lyrics in her heartbreak ballads often speak about lost love and “teen angst”. Also numerous references to her beloved California are never far away in the lyrics. Pain is apparently constantly interspersed with joy and pleasure.
Bethany’s voice and appearance might give you an impression of her being a nice and amiable sweetheart, but I have some doubts if she really is such a sweety all the time. In some of the songs (eg. “I do not know how”) she indeed starts very sweet and girly, but soon enough after the first verse she jumps into punky rhythms with a good pace. And even the “f-word” drops every now and then.
There is also a very nice collaboration between the musicians themselves; they play very tight, much to the satisfaction of the fans of this genre of music. The band is well attuned to each other. The bass lines simple but very nice and compelling, and the guitars and imploring and switch between noise, pop, rock and surf. And it is a real pleasure to overview Bobb Bruno getting absorbed in his guitar playing, often shaking his head at the sound of the music. He gives you the impression that all is well for him as long as he can play some music.
Top moments in this show were definitely “Heaven sent”, “Feeling OK”, oldie “Crazy for you”, but also a very beautiful version of “California Nights”. The reverb effects in this track made your head spin. And a great intro was given in the (sadly only) encore “Boyfriend”.
Sometimes there ‘s gossip and rumours in the press about the fact that Bethany’s lyrics are often simple and poorly elaborate. But what the heck, if I want to read quality prose I will take a book at hand. I equally enjoy simple and nice poppy tunes and lyrics that remind me of my own teen years. Best Coast gives me that joy !
Finally one more tip: Buy Best Coast their latest CD , set the volume to 10 in your car and you find yourself in a Ford Mustang Convertible in a vast Californian landscape . Do it!
