Ryley Walker, die getipt wordt door de internationale pers als de BIG NEXT op het vlak van de folk rock trad op in de gezellige living van club de loge. Het lijkt alsof dat de 25-jarige Ryley geboren is met een gitaar in de hand. Met zijn betoverend tokkelend en fingerpicking gitaarspel bekoord hij zowel jong als oud, en neemt hij je mee op een reis doorheen de prachtige natuur van de Verenigde Staten. Zo zouden zijn songs niet hebben misstaan op de soundtrack van “Into the wild”. Wanneer hij speelt zal je het ene moment zweven over de weidse vlakten van Amerika of de wouden van Alaska, en het andere moment wandel je ’s ochtends door een tuin waar de dauwdruppels nog zichtbaar zijn, maar het blijft steeds betoverend mooi.
Er wordt vaak verwezen naar de seventies-stijl waarin hij speelt, maar de talrijk opgekomen jeugd (het gros van het publiek was tussen de 20 en 35 jaar) bewijst dat dit goed in de markt ligt. Het is misschien net het contrast met de gejaagdheid van tegenwoordig die het publiek net aanspreekt: je kan niet anders dan er stil van worden en genieten.
Tijdens dit concert bracht Ryley een mix van nieuwe tracks uit zijn onlangs op 31/03 verschenen 2e album ‘Primrose Green’, maar ook ‘oudere’ nummers van zijn vorige album ‘All kinds of you’, tussendoor genietend van een wijntje. De bindteksten waren ludiek en bijzonder geestig, maar tijdens het spelen van de nummers ging hij volledig op in zijn muziek en leek het alsof hij alleen voor jou de nummers speelde. Als toeschouwer voelde je bij elk nummer een golf van emoties over je heen komen. De kippenvelmomenten waren dan ook legio. Ook deze keer waren de vocale uithalen van de partij en pasten perfect bij zijn gitaarspel.
Ryley is ook een erg dankbaar artiest, en hij laat je dat ook voelen na elk nummer. Sympathiek was dat hij ook meermaals verwees naar tijdgenoot en long-time friend Daniel Bachman die het voorprogramma deed. Ook na de show is hij niet te beroerd om je persoonlijk te woord te staan. Hoewel hij momenteel met een strak tijdschema zit (morgen staat Londen, en daarna Manchester op het programma) neemt hij toch de tijd voor zijn fans.
Voor mij waren de toppers van dit concert: ‘On the banks of the old Kishwaukee’, de titeltrack ‘Primrose Green’, maar ook de covers ‘Fair Play’ van Van Morisson en de encore ‘If I were a carpenter’ van Tim Hardin werden bijzonder goed gebracht.
Het is verrassend wat één man met een gitaar (12-string of gewone gitaar) allemaal niet teweeg kan brengen. Ryley Walker is een erg sympathiek artiest die waar biedt voor je geld.

Ryley Walker, who is tipped by the international press as the BIG NEXT in the field of folk rock, performed in the cozy living room of club De loge. It seems that the 25 year old Ryley was born with a guitar in his hand. With its enchanting strumming and fingerpicking guitar he charmed both young and old, and he takes you on a journey through the beautiful nature of the United States. His songs would not be out of place on the soundtrack of for example ” Into the wild ” . When he plays , you will float one moment on the vast plains of America or the Alaskan forests, and the next moment you walk in the morning by a garden where dewdrops are still visible, but it is always enchanting .
Often is referred to the seventies style in which he plays, but the numerous emerged youth ( the majority of the audience was between 20 and 35 years old ) proves that this is still well in the market. It might be just the contrast with today’s excitement that just appeals to the audience : you can not help but be silent and enjoy.
During this concert Ryley brought a mix of new tracks recently appeared on the ‘Primrose Green’ album (which came out on the 31st of March), but also ‘older’ songs from his previous album ‘All kinds of you’, whilst enjoying some wine. His comments in between each track were very playful and witty, but while playing the songs he was completely into his music and it seemed as if he just played the songs only for you . As a listener, you could feel a wave of emotion surfing over you with each and every song. Goosebumps moments were therefore many. His vocal take outs and grunts matched perfectly with his guitar playing.
Ryley is also a very grateful artist and he shows this after each number. During the gig he also repeatedly referred to contemporary and long-time friend Daniel Bachman, who did the supporting act. Even after the show, he is always willing to chat with you personally. Although he is currently on a tight schedule (tomorrow London, then Manchester is on the program), he still makes time for his fans.
For me the highlights of this concert were: ‘On the banks of the old Kishwaukee’ and the title track ‘Primrose Green’, but also covers ‘Fair Play ‘ by Van Morrison and the encore ” If I Were a Carpenter ” by Tim Hardin were particularly good.
It is surprising what one man with a guitar (12 -string guitar or regular) can do to your emotions. Ryley Walker is a very likeable artist who gives you value-for-money.
