Een optreden bijwonen van Peter Hook and The Light is als terechtkomen in een draaikolk van emoties en muziek. Wat je ook doet, je kan niet anders dan je laten leiden door de dreunende baslijnen met het typische choruseffect van de Hookmeister. Hij weet zoals steeds het publiek te bespelen met zijn jarenlange ervaring en de prachtige Joy Division songs, die zovele andere latere bands hebben beïnvloed (en nog steeds).
Peter wordt sinds enkele jaren ondersteund door de geweldige begeleidingsband “The Light”. Zoon Jack bespeelt de tweede basgitaar, Andy Poole bedient de keys en oude makkers Potsy en Paul Kehoe uit de Monaco-periode bedienen respectievelijk gitaar en drums. En geloof me, als jarenlange Joy Division-adept kan ik zeggen dat niemand, maar dan ook niemand de erfenis van deze belangrijke muziekband meer eer aandoet dan Peter Hook en zijn Light.
Ze spelen niet alleen de nummers erg strak, maar Peter’s stem benaderd bij momenten deze van cultlegende Ian Curtis wel erg nauw, of brengt je op zijn minst in dezelfde sfeer. En uiteraard zijn ook de baslijnen intussen legendarisch. Het lijkt wel of de man zijn basgitaar ondertussen een verlengde is geworden van zijn lichaam.
Na recente optredens in Hawaii, Australië en Mexico kon Peter Hook nog steeds de nederigheid opbrengen om tussendoor nog op te treden op het Eurorock-festival in het toch wel iets minder exotische Limburgse Neerpelt dat dit jaar blijkbaar door organisatorische en financiële problemen op het laatste moment fel werd geplaagd.
Oude rot Peter Hook is echter een man van zijn woord en deed ondanks onzekerheid over al het dan niet betaald worden nog steeds wat hij had beloofd: ons een geweldig optreden te berde geven.
En hoewel Eurorock overwegend toch wordt gekenmerkt door ijskoude ebm- en industrialklanken, hij bracht de menigte al snel tot bewegen.
Volgens de affiche werd ons een tribute belooft van Joy Division songs. Peter Hook heeft de verwachtingen hierbij op elk vlak ingelost en de ganse setlist bestond uit dan ook uit topsongs uit beide JD albums: lifechangers “Unknown Pleasures” en “Closer”.
Er werd gestart met het emotionele “Atmosphere” (nota bene als eerbetoon aan de onlangs overleden blueslegende BB King), gevolgd door “The Sound Of Music”.
Dit alles werd al vanaf de eerste noot gesmaakt door het aanwezige publiek maar het was nog even wachten tot opzweper “No Love Lost” vooraleer de eerste benen helemaal in beweging kwamen.
En ja hoor, in “Digital” met de onsterfelijke chant “day in, day out, day in, day out”, het nummer dat vervolgens aan bod kwam, ontstond de eerste echte explosie! Een wervelende mosh pit had zich intussen in beweging gebracht en bij de normaal erg afstandelijke security kwam zelfs hier al een eerste glimlach op de lippen.
De sfeer werd progressief meer en meer uitgelaten naarmate het optreden vorderde. Dat is ook logisch als je weet dat topsongs als “Disorder”, “Isolation”, “She’s Lost Control” en “Shadowplay” (geweldige gitaar die Potsy daar trouwens bespeelt!) op het programma stonden.
Het publiek dat bij de eerdere optredens vanavond zich volgens de aloude Gothic- en EBM-etiquette eerder zeer voorzichtig had bewogen stond nu intussen toch wel in lichterlaaie en liet zich volledig gaan.
En ook na al die jaren is Hooky zijn punkverleden nog steeds trouw gebleven door opnieuw een geweldige versie te brengen van het nummer “Warsaw” (BTW: Warsaw was ook de naam die ze gebruikten vooraleer ze met Joy Division op de proppen kwamen, en nog eerder noemden ze zich zelfs “Stiff Kittens”).
Als apotheose deden de laatste en tevens onsterfelijke nummers “Ceremony” (met een intussen dansende security) “Transmission” en “Love Will Tear Us Apart” de tent deden helemaal ontploffen.
Het ganse concert is niet alleen op muzikaal vlak top, maar Peter Hook toont zich de ganse tijd ook als de ideale gastheer. Er is steeds voldoende interactie met het publiek en de dankwoorden aan BB King, Ian Curtis en een zekere “Vee die het optreden had gefixt” maken hem wel erg sympathiek. Tijdens het optreden vond hij zelfs de tijd om een T-shirt te signeren dat hem vanuit het publiek werd toegeworpen. En een meisje dat vooraan stond was al helemaal in de wolken nadat Hooky haar boek (waarvan hij tevens de auteur is) had getekend!
Peter Hook en zijn Light stonden aanvankelijk geprogrammeerd om op te treden op de Heaven stage van Eurorock. Uiteindelijk is hij door de interne strubbelingen toch op de Hell stage belandt. Terecht… zijn optreden was dan ook duivels goed!

Attending a performance of Peter Hook and The Light is like ending up in a vortex of emotions and music. Whatever you do, you simply can’t refuse the guidance of the thumping bass lines with the typical chorus effect of the “Hookmeister”. As always Peter Hook knows how please the audience with his years of experience and the great Joy Division songs which affected so many other subsequent bands (and they still do).
For several years now Peter is supported by his great backing band called “The Light”. Son Jack plays the second bass, Andy Poole serves the keys and old mates Potsy and Paul Kehoe from Peter’s earlier band Monaco respectively handle guitar and drums. And believe me, being a die hard Joy Division fan for ages now, I can say that really nobody plays and sings the old Joy Division songs like they do. They do not only play the songs very tight and trustworthy, but Peter’s voice at times approaches cult legend Ian Curtis’ timbre very closely, or brings you at least in the same atmosphere. And, of course, in the meantime, the bass lines are also legendary. It seems like the man his bass guitar has become an extension of his body.
After recent gigs in Hawaii, Australia and Mexico, Peter Hook was still humble enough to perform at the Eurorock festival in the somehow less exotic rainy Neerpelt in Belgian Limburg. Unfortunatly this festival was in 2015 apparenly bothered by organizational and financial problems at the last minute.
However Hooky is a man of his word and he still did what he had promised: he still gave us a great performance although he was not certain in getting paid for it. And although Eurorock mostly is characterized by ice cold ebm and industrial sounds, Hooky was able to move the crowd.
According to the poster, the Eurorock organisation promised us a tribute to Joy Division.
Peter Hook has fulfilled all expectations. The entire setlist consisted of topsongs from both JD albums: the lifechangers “Unknown Pleasures” and “Closer”.
It started with the emotional “Atmosphere” (nota bene as a tribute to the recently deceased blues legend BB King), followed by “The Sound Of Music”.
All of this was appreciated by the audience from the first note, but the majority of the crowd especially started to ignite with the uplifting song “No Love Lost” : the first dance moves appeared. And sure enough, “Digital” with the immortal chant “day in, day out, day in, day out”, was the first real fire starter! A swirling mosh pit had set in motion and the normally very distant and reluctant security guys even had their first smiling grin.
The atmosphere became more and more exuberant as the action progressed. That makes sense knowing topsongs as “Disorder”, “Isolation”, “She’s Lost Control” and “Shadowplay” (great guitar being played there by Potsy by the way!) were on the program. In earlier performances tonight the audience behaved according to the typical Gothic-EBM-etiquette: rather cautiously and aloof. This all changed due to Hooky’s performance: the crowd was completely ablazed.
And even after all these years Peter Hook is still loyal to his punk past by bringing up a great version of “Warsaw” (BTW: Warsaw was also the name they used before they came up with Joy Division, before that they called themselves “Stiff Kittens”). As apotheosis Peter Hook & The Light played the immortal songs “Ceremony” (which made the security dance!) “Transmission” and “Love Will Tear Us Apart”. The festival tent was very close to an explosion at this point
This gig was not only top notch musicwise, but Peter Hook shows himself all the time as a great host. There is always enough interaction with the audience and tributes to BB King, Ian Curtis and a certain “Vee” (apparently the guy who fixed this gig) make Peter very sympathetic. During the performance he even found the time to sign a t-shirt that was thrown to him from within the audience. And a girl in the front row was over the moon after Hooky had signed her book “Unknown Pleasures” (of which he is also the author).
Peter Hook and The Light were initially programmed to act on the Heaven stage of Eurorock. Ultimately due to all the organisational troubles, they end up on the Hell stage. So damn right, that’s where they belong … this gig was devilishly good!
