Op 4 en 5 oktober worden de muzikale vakjes op het Gentse showcasefestival Waterfront mooi opgeborgen. Er is ook plaats voor muziek waar je al eens mag voor gaan zitten en alles tot je mag laten doordringen. Landscape Magazine bijvoorbeeld. Ze leggen zelf uit waar je je aan mag verwachten…
Wat is jullie muzikale geschiedenis tot nu toe?
Landscape Magazine werd opgericht in het begin van 2015, en dit na een uitwisselingsbijeenkomst vol improvisatie met de studenten van P.A.R.T.S, een dansschool in Brussel. Dat bleek een openbaring voor ons, en dus wilden we daarna verder blijven samenwerken. Soms was dat samen dan weer individueel, maar altijd was er het idee om in dezelfde richting te blijven gaan. De ene gebruikte de creaties van de andere om zichzelf uit te drukken. Stap voor stap werd ons repertoire nauwkeuriger, net als onze werkwijze. De regel is dat elk geproduceerd geluid afgeleid moet kunnen worden uit onze instrumenten, wat soms moeilijk is door de verschillende combinaties van de pedaaleffecten. Onze eerste plaat is het resultaat van dit onderzoek, alsook de wens om onze muziek op te nemen en te delen.
Wanneer realiseerden jullie zich dat muziek jullie passie is?
Voor ons beiden was dat al rond de leeftijd van tien, we hadden toen al een verslindende passie voor muziek. Elk in een compleet andere context, we hadden zelfs niet eens dezelfde muzikale achtergrond, maar we hadden een ongelooflijk grote behoefte om iets te doen, en sinds 2015 zijn we samen begonnen.
Door het digitale tijdperk hebben we nog nooit zoveel bands gehoord als nu. Hoe kan je opvallen of denk je dat kwaliteit toch naar boven komt?
Het is heel moeilijk om vandaag op te vallen. De mogelijkheden die we tegenwoordig hebben om een publiek te bereiken zijn enorm, dankzij het internet is dat veel eenvoudiger dan 20 jaar geleden. Maar eigenlijk verdrinkt het publiek in de hoeveelheid. Wij geloven dat de sleutel tot een hypothetisch succes in de eerste plaats uit de eerlijkheid en de kwaliteit van het werk komt. Originaliteit is misschien het meest nodige om een project er te laten uitspringen. En wat de dingen ook moeilijk maakt is de snelheid die nodig is om te reageren en je aanpassen aan alle communicatiemiddelen. Soms moeten we meer doen dan muziek spelen om het publiek te boeien.
Waterfront is een Belgisch showcasefestival. Wat maakt de Belgische muziekscene volgens jullie zo uniek of is die helemaal niet uniek? Kennen jullie Belgische bands waar we zeker naar moeten luisteren?
De Belgische muziekscene is buitengewoon wegens haar eclecticisme. De nabijheid van landen zoals Duitsland, Nederland of Frankrijk maakt van België de plek bij uitstek om het op allerlei manieren beter te doen. Er is niet één identiteit, maar er zijn er veel, en deze verschillen vormen onze rijkdom. Er zijn veel Belgische bands waar we van houden waaronder Hooverphonic, Arid, King Child, onze vrienden van Run Sofa … Je hebt ze zeker al gehoord!!!
Wie of wat zijn de inspiratie en hoe zouden jullie je muziek zelf beschrijven?
Onze inspiratie komt van het geluidsmateriaal zelf en de mogelijke combinaties hiervan. Vanwege onze zeer verschillende achtergronden hebben we een brede kijk op muziek, van klassiek tot rock en van elektro tot jazz. Onze muziek is een beetje als een boek met een reeks geluidsschilderijen die je tot reizen aanzetten. Het repertoire bestaat uit een tiental liedjes. Een tiental verhalen waarvan de onderwerpen op muziek zijn gezet, en die kunnen afkomstig zijn uit een stripverhaal of een film. Elke compositie is gebaseerd op een eigen universum. Muzikale structuren in ostinato, geschriften, thema’s of vrije improvisaties worden hierbij door elkaar gemengd.
Voor welke band zouden jullie de support willen spelen en waarom?
Moeilijke vraag, Sigur Rós. We houden van de geluiden die ze maken, de manier waarop ze hun tracks brengen is zeer krachtig. We houden ook van hun creativiteit, elk album heeft iets unieks en heeft een ander geluid.
Wat maakt jullie anders dan andere bands denk je?
Bijzonder voor ons is dat we altijd onze geluiden live opnieuw willen maken, we gebruiken geen vooropgenomen samples. Dit was een uitdaging omdat sommige van onze geluiden op een niet-conventionele manier met allerlei instrumenten zijn gemaakt met verschillende effecten. Uiteindelijk hebben we het geluid dat we willen, en dat is ons geluid. Eenvoudig en eerlijk, en we geloven dat onze muziek op deze manier een publiek zal raken.
Wat wordt de volgende (grote) stap voor de band?
We creëren eigenlijk een repertoire met telkens een andere samenwerking met een artiest waar we van houden en met wie we muziek willen maken. Het eerste opus werd in september 2019 voorgesteld, een compositie in samenwerking met de didgeridoo-speler Mirko Bozzetto. We willen graag een album uitbrengen met nieuwe nummers, dat is de volgende stap die we hopen te bereiken. We kunnen al zeggen dat dit repertoire nogal gefocust is op rock.

Red & Black Light van Ibrahim Maalouf.
En wat is je favoriete plaat aller tijden en waarom?
Dark Side Of The Moon van Pink Floyd. Dat waren visionaire muzikanten, het geluid was voor deze tijd echt wel geniaal! Hun muziek was weg van alle tradities. En dan een album zonder pauze tussen de nummers, net als een boek met verschillende hoofdstukken… Het was gewoon geniaal!
Met wie zou je het niet erg vinden om 8 uur mee in een lift te zitten en wat zou je doen?
Thom Yorke, en als de lift naar de hemel gaat dan waarom niet met Jimi Hendrix of Igor Stravinsky.
Wat ga je precies doen op Waterfront?
Onszelf zijn, onze verhalen op je afsturen en je proberen te laten dromen!

How should we present your musical history so far?
We formed Landscape Magazine in the beginning of 2015, following an exchange meeting full of improvisation with the students of P.A.R.T.S, a contemporary dance school in Brussels.
This first performance was a revelation for us and the desire to create together became a necessity. All this led us instinctively to create loops; together or individually, but always with the idea of resonating in the same direction. One using the creations of the other to express himself.
Step by step, our repertoire has become more precise, as well as our method of operation: the rule being that each sound produced must be derived solely from our instruments, which is sometimes denatured by differents pedal effects combinations. Our first disc is the result of these researches, the desire to record our music, to arrange and share it.
When did you realize that playing music is your passion?
For both of us very young already around the age of ten, we have a devouring passion for music. Each in a completely different context and culture, and even if we do not have the same musical origins at the base, we have come together with the same burning need for creation, nourished since childhood. we started together in 2015.
Because of the digital age, we have never heard so many bands as much as now. How can you stand out or do you think that quality will come to the fore anyway?
It is very difficult to stand out today. The possibilities we have nowadays to get to an audience are huge, thanks to internet it’s considerably simpler than it was 20 years ago. But actually, the public is drowned by the quantity. We believe that the key to a hypothetical success comes first and foremost from the honesty and the quality of the work, Originality is maybe one of the biggest part of the ingredients needed to highlight a project facing the ocean of productions available. And what makes things difficult, is the speed necessary to react and adapt to all the communication tools, the today’s society is fool of appearance, and sometimes we have to play with it more than just playing music to captivate the public.
Waterfront is a Belgian showcase festival. What do you think makes the Belgian music scene unique, or is it not unique at all? Do you know Belgian bands we should definitely have to listen to?
The Belgian music scene is extraordinary because of its eclecticism. The power of imagination in our region is fabulous. The proximity of countries such as Germany, Holland or France gives Belgium a place of choice in the art of mixing, recomposing, but also to emulate absolutely incredible recipes. There is not one identity but many, the differences are our wealth. There are many Belgian bands that we love! Among them is Hooverphonic, Arid, King Child, our friends from Run Sofa … You have certainly heard them !!!
Who or what are inspiration and how would you describe your music yourself?
The basis of our inspiration comes from the sound material itself and the possible combinations of these. Because of our very different origins, we have a wide influences, from classical to rock to electro or jazz. Our music is a bit like a book of news, a set of sound paintings that encourage travel. And the repertoire consists of a dozen songs. A dozen stories whose subjects set to music could be from a comic book or a film. Each composition is based on a universe of its own. Developed informally most of the time, mixing structures in ostinato, written elements, themes or free improvisations.
Which band would you like to play the support for and why?
Difficult question, Sigur Rós. We love the sounds they develop, the way they drive their tracks is very powerful. We love their creativity, each album has an unique and different sound.
What makes you different from other bands you think?
A very particular thing about us is that we always recreate our sounds live, we don’t use and don’t want to use pre recorder samples. This has been a challenge because some of our sounds are made using the instruments in a non-conventional way, all this going through many differents effects to finally produce the sound we want, and this is our sound, that’s one of the keys of our music and is simple and honest and we believe that this way our music will touch a public.
What will the next (major) step be for the band?
We are actually creating a repertoire with each time a différent collaboration with an artist we love and with whom we want to create music. This first opus will be presented in September 2019, it is a composition in partnership with Mirko Bozzetto, Didgeridoo player. We would like to release an album with all these new songs, it’s the next step that we hope to achieve. We can already say that this repertoire is rather focused rock.

And what is your favorite record of all time and why?
Dark Side Of The Moon by Pink Floyd. They were visionary musicians, they sought the sound with, for this period, really genius! Their music was out of the traditions. And then this album, without breaks between songs…. Like one book with different episode… It was just genius!
With whom would you not mind spending 8 hours in an elevator and why?
Thom Yorke, and is the elevator is in heaven why not Jimi Hendrix or Igor Stravinsky.

To be ourselves, play our stories, and try to make you dream!
