Een band met meer bands in hun rugzak dan het aantal bandleden! Greg en Julien lieten zich reeds horen in bands als Daggers, Cocaine Piss, Vuyvr & Elizabeth. Het duo vond elkaar opnieuw in hun nieuwe post-something-project Deathmaze. Wij hadden een kennismakingsbabbel met Julien. Op vrijdag 6 maart speelt Deathmaze in de Kinky Star, waar ze hun pas verschenen debuutalbum Eau Rouge zullen laten weerklinken.
Wat betekent de bandnaam Deathmaze voor jou?
Hij is interpreteerbaar, maar voor mij misschien iets met een einde en een hergeboorte?
Hoe zijn jullie als band begonnen? Hoe en waar hebben jullie mekaar gevonden?
We (Greg en ik) kennen elkaar al ongeveer 15 jaar. We zijn allebei afkomstig van het zuiden van België. Na al die jaren verbonden te zijn in verschillende muzikale projecten, was december 2018 het juiste ogenblik om samen iets nieuws te starten.
Hoe komt een Deathmaze-nummer tot stand?
De manier waarop we voor ons debuutalbum Eau Rouge te werk gingen, liep meestal zo: we brachten onze ideeën samen rond een ruwe beat die Greg later afwerkte. En dan namen we veel tijd om met de harmonie tussen gitaar en bas te spelen, wat iets is wat we bijzonder graag doen.
Hoe beschrijf je zelf jullie sound het liefst?
We zijn dit project niet gestart met een bepaalde stijl in ons hoofd. Die kwam vrij natuurlijk, terwijl we componeerden. Ik ben nog steeds niet zeker hoe ik dit project moet ‘labelen’; iets tussen postpunk, metal, new wave, rock, post-iets-anders, … Vertel het ons maar.
Waar zou je de band binnen enkele jaren graag zien staan?
Nog steeds plaatjes maken.
Wat is je eerste muzikale herinnering?
Als kind naar muziek op de radio luisteren met mijn moeder.
Wat is je muzikale natte droom?
Een livesessie spelen in de studio van Classic 21 of KEXP.

What does the band name Deathmaze mean for you?
It is up for interpretation, but for me maybe something about an end or a rebirth?
How did the band began? How and where have you found each other?
We (Greg and me) know each other for something like 15 years. We are both originally from the south of Belgium. After all those years of being connected through different musical projects, december 2018 was the right time to start something together.
In the creating process, how do you write a new song ?
The way we worked on our debut album Eau Rouge usually went like this: we start by bringing our ideas together around a rough beat that Greg would later finalize and then spend a lot of time playing around harmonies between the guitar and the bass; which is something we particularly enjoy doing.
How do you prefer to describe your music?
We didn’t start this project with a specific style in mind. It came together pretty naturally while composing. I’m still unsure today how to categorize this project; something between post-punk, metal, new-wave, rock, post-somethingelse, etc… You tell me.
Where would you like to see the band within a few years?
Still making records.
What is your first musical memory?
When I was a kid, listening music on the radio with my mum.
What is your musical dream / target / wish?
Playing a live session in the studio of Classic 21 or KEXP.
