PERVERTED BY LANGUAGE Liège, La Zone (12/06/2015)

by Luminous Dash

Ze zeggen zelf: “Perverted by Language never set out to sound like anything or anyone in particular, just to explore the depths of our own psyche”.

Perverted By Language is a Brussels quintet which provides us living proof that post-punk still matters and that this style of music clearly still has an interest in many hearts and ears. The band introduces itself simultaneously accurate and mysterious on their website and this duality even applies to its name “Perverted By Language”. Cult Manchester band The Fall released in 1983 an album with that title. Yet you can hear in PBL’s repertoire the influence of just about every influential Manchester band from the 80s … except those of Mark E. Smith ’s The Fall.

They once opened for ChameleonsVox and still play those dark pumping bass lines, sparkling and crystal clear guitar tunes, determined drums and dark vocals… everything we expect from this kind of music.
And OK, they actually play music that was obviously inspired by the ’80s, but they give an original contemporary twist to it to keep it interesting.

This band is a bit of an international combo with its headquarters in Brussels.
Guitarist Ronan Collot and bassist Elise Boénnec are both from the French Britanny. Francesco Carlucci is an Italian drummer and Jeremy Thomas is the band’s a British singer. Guitar player Guy Wilssens is PBL’s only Belgian member.
These five sympathetic people have found each other in their love for music, and especially those of the (Northern) English bands of which we definitely hear an influence in their songs. Indeed, hearing PBL reminds me of lyrics of The Smiths, the voice and darkness of Joy Division, very clearly the guitar sound of The Chameleons and even now and then I sense some influences from the London eighties band The Kitchens of Distinction. If you feel any need to compare with contemporary bands, you have to think of Editors and Interpol.

Guitarist Ronan and frontman/vocalist Jeremy (Jez to his friends) started the band in 2007 and were subsequently completed by the other members. Most of the songs they play exist for some years now, but were actually only played live . On account of some performances some bootlegs could be found on the Internet: “Live At Soirées Cerises” , as
well as an official bootleg which was recorded during the Dark Entries Night and is entitled “Live at the Kinky Star , Ghent, 29th April 2011” . Only very recently on October 13th 2014 PBL finally released their first full CD called “Boxers”. It received very favorable reviews and was also chosen by some webzines as “Best Album” .

During tonight’s gig at “La Zone” in Liege this band also performed a series of mesmerising and fascinating songs. Not only the hits from their debut album were played in La Zone, PBL also performed some of the new songs (including the awesome “Anti Love Song ‘) which are due to appear on their second CD (planned in spring 2016).
To be honest, frontman Jeremy initially started a bit hesitating. During the first 2 songs his voice wasn’t always 100% in tune. But pretty soon he was warmed up and more at ease, which of course only benefited his performance. Jez soon turned out to be a really gifted singer who can charm the audience with his warm and dark voice. Unfortunately, due to the sunny weather and and unforeseen football match Belgium-Wales, the turnout of the audience was rather limited. Nevertheless, Jeremy did his very best.

In many of their songs the influence of their musical heroes and heritage can be heard. Yet PBL are not willing to copy. They say: “Perverted by Language never set out to sound like anything or anyone in particular, just to explore the depths of our own psyche”. They indeed make their own mix of the incentives that have influenced them. And believe me…. they do it extremely well and professionally!
In just a single concert they treat us with delicious melodic post-punk (“Lost for Words” with excellent hooky-esque bass playing and “The Box”), raw punk (“The Beach”), and even once in a while some Goth- (“Pewter Eyes”) and metal sounds (“Perverted by Language”).
And there always is the constant presence of energetic and dueling guitars, a monolithic bass, intruding drums which spare nothing, and certainly the wonderful baritone voice of Jez reminiscent at times of a mix of Ian Curtis (Joy Division), Tom Smith (The Editors) and Peter Murphy (Bauhaus). That same voice was stunning during the tribute to the recently deceased “Prince of Darkness” Christopher Lee in their cover of Joy Division’s “New Dawn Fades”.

PBL’s music is rather dark and often very emotional, but still never depressing. This due to the often explosive release of the songs, their great guitar orgies and lyrics regularly brought in a Morrissey-esque style.

Finally, one more thing: in recent years I have rarely seen such a beautiful CD cover like that of “The Boxer” by PBL. It displays a technicolor vintage photograph of a young lad wearing boxing gloves and a T-shirt Grand Prix at the Nuremberg Ring. This cover reminds me vaguely of the wonderful The Smiths LP sleeves from the 80’s. A similar atmosphere was also raised during tonight’s performance via photo-projection of similar images, which gave the audience a nice extra.

If I still can give one criticism, then it must be the following: this band thinks too much they make music only for a niche audience. To me this is not quite right and far too modest. Songs by Perverted By Language are catchy enough to be discovered by a wider audience. They have everything to appeal to a much wider audience.
