12 april is voor onze site een historische dag: tien jaar! Hiep, hiep hoera voor onszelf, maar uiteraard willen we dat vieren op de manier die Luminous Dash het meeste eer aandoet en wel met een optreden van gloednieuw Belgisch talent. En dat is het geval. Op 12 april presenteren we het allereerste (!) optreden van Nieuwe Lichting-finalist Salvia in de BarBroos in Gent (Oude Beestenmarkt). Maar eerst tijd voor een interview met bezielster Nicole Selivan.
Je woont nu in Brussel en je hebt je eigen muzikale project Salvia, maar je had ook een eigen band toen je in Oekraïne woonde. Kun je ons daar iets over vertellen en is er een groot verschil tussen de twee ?
Nicole: In Oekraïne heette mijn muzikale project PROKLYANA. De artiestennaam zelf betekende zoiets als “vervloekt”, dus de donkere noten kwamen al lang geleden in me op. Ik schreef nogal depressieve muziek. Het verschil tussen PROKLYANA en Salvia zit hem vooral in het geluid. Voorheen schreef ik muziek met synthesizers, elektronische muziek en minder vaak met gitaren. Bovendien kon ik mijn genre soms gewoon “indie” noemen. Voorheen hielp Nikita, een geluidsproducer met wie ik het liefst samenwerk, me bij het schrijven van bijna elk nummer. Maar toen ik met Salvia begon, leerde ik veel en veranderde ook mijn sound en het genre ervan en natuurlijk begon ik zelf ook muziek te schrijven en een gitaar te gebruiken.
Eenmaal in België begon je met Salvia. Hoe is dat gekomen?
Nicole: Toen ik voor het eerst naar België kwam, dacht ik aanvankelijk dat ik nooit meer een muzikant zou zijn, omdat alles wat “van mij” was gewoon in Oekraïne was, en hier in België was ik in wezen niemand. Maar op een gegeven moment realiseerde ik me iets belangrijks – en wel dat ik gewoon van nul kon beginnen en zo opnieuw mezelf als muzikant kon creëren, met nieuwe ervaringen en nieuwe emoties. Een tijd lang hoopte ik nog dat ik verder zou werken aan PROKLYANA, omdat het echt moeilijk was om het project te vergeten dat ik sinds mijn 15e had gemaakt. Op een dag, toen ik erg ziek was en 2 weken in bed lag, realiseerde ik me dat je het verleden moet kunnen loslaten, hoezeer ik er ook aan gehecht was. Ik had al heel lang het idee om Salvia te creëren, maar op die dag besloot ik eindelijk om mezelf op een nieuwe manier te accepteren en het maximale uit Salvia te halen.
Wist je in het begin dat je muzikanten mensen waren van The Haunted Youth en King Viktor?
Nicole: Ik ben echt verbaasd dat dit zo gewaardeerd wordt door zulke professionals, maar voor mij is dat natuurlijk een heel goed teken! Het betekent wellicht dat ik alles goed doe en dat mensen echt kan raken. Over The Haunted Youth… Ik zal eerlijk zijn met je, ik had geen idee wat voor band het was, dus in feite zag ik het in het begin waarschijnlijk anders dan elke andere muzikant die in België woont. Maar toen ik Tom en Nick hoorde spelen, en ook toen Arno van King Victor nu gitaar speelde in plaats van drums, werd ik ongelooflijk blij dat ik met zulke professionals kon werken en het motiveert me enorm om alsmaar beter te worden.
Je muziek is nogal donker en ik hoorde dat je opgroeide als dochter van een begrafenisondernemer, dus de dood was altijd een deel van je leven, heeft dat je muziek beïnvloed?
Nicole: Ja, ik ben opgegroeid in een familie van een begrafenisondernemer en ik denk dat dat mij heeft beïnvloed. Weet je, van kinds af aan heb ik vaak verschillende soorten doodskisten gezien, bedekt met verschillende stoffen, kransen versierd met verschillende kunstbloemen, beeldjes of begrafenislinten. Ik weet hoe belangrijk dat is, en op deze manier kun je soms zien hoe mooi zelfs zoiets als de dood kan zijn. Dit is ook een soort creativiteit en een belangrijke missie. Natuurlijk had dit een enorme invloed op mijn gevoel van thema’s waar gewoonlijk niet over gesproken wordt. Dat is waarschijnlijk de reden waarom ik mezelf kan toestaan om in mijn liedjes dingen aan de orde te stellen waar mensen niet over proberen te praten, maar waar ze tenminste soms wel over nadenken.
Ik denk dat veel mensen zullen zeggen dat je goth maakt, denk je dat Salvia goth is?
Nicole: Ik kan Salvia niet alleen maar gothic noemen. Naar mijn mening kan Salvia heel verschillend zijn! Ik wil mezelf niet beperken tot één genre. Ik denk dat alles in deze wereld altijd verandert, de zomer gaat weg, de winter komt, en na de winter komt de lente. Dus mijn muziek kan zo verschillend zijn dat mensen er in de toekomst misschien zelfs verbaasd over zullen zijn. Maar op dit moment doe ik echt iets duisters en depressiefs. Ik maak het zo donker omdat dat is hoe ik me voel en wat ik heb meegemaakt.
Wat zeker is, is dat jullie een internationale sound hebben. Jullie staan op Left Of The Dial, dus ik neem aan dat jullie Europa willen veroveren?
Nicole: Ik wil zeker Europa veroveren, hahaha, maar niet via een oorlog. Ik wil Europa veroveren met iets dat mensen de kans geeft om emoties te voelen die in Europa soms achter een glimlach verborgen worden gehouden. Dat is normaal, toch is ieder mens uniek, zelfs in zijn verdriet. Sommige emoties zijn gewoon taboe, dus laat Salvia soms een plek zijn waar je pijn en verdriet kunt voelen, het kan begrijpen en ermee om kan gaan, maar tegelijkertijd niet door de maatschappij veroordeeld worden omdat je “niet lacht”.
Denk je dat Salvia iets kan betekenen in Oekraïne?
Nicole: Ik ben er niet zo zeker van dat Salvia erg populair zal zijn in Oekraïne of andere Slavische landen. Het is een paradox, mijn geluid is relatief Slavisch om interessant te zijn voor Europeanen, maar tegelijkertijd lijkt het me niet Slavisch genoeg om aan te slaan in Oekraïne. Maar misschien zijn Oekraïners gewoon blij met het feit dat SALVIA gemaakt is door een Oekraïense vrouw, en dat zou meer dan genoeg zijn voor mij, zelfs als ze mijn liedjes niet leuk vinden. (lacht)
Veel mensen kennen je natuurlijk van De Nieuwe Lichting, hoe was het om daaraan mee te doen en heb je er veel van geleerd?
Nicole: In het begin had ik het niet door hoe groot deze wedstrijd is, ik begreep echt niet wat hier als populair was en wat niet. Maar ik ben aan het bijbenen hoor! Voor mij was het natuurlijk gewoon: ik heb een nummer ingestuurd, laten we maar eens kijken wat eruit komt. Later begonnen ze me uit te leggen hoe cool het is, dus ik realiseerde me de omvang ervan en was erg blij toen ze me vertelden dat ik bij de 9 finalisten zat. En ik was een beetje ontgoocheld dat ik niet bij de 3 finalisten zat, ik had waarschijnlijk niet genoeg macht om mensen voor mij te laten stemmen, maar De Nieuwe Lichting was sowieso de grote stap voor Salvia.
En waarom heb je voor de naam Salvia gekozen? Het is niet de makkelijkste naam om te gebruiken op Instagram hoor!
Nicole: Instagram vervloekt me en zegt: “Dit kan te maken hebben met de verkoop van drugs”. Maar in feite, als je “Salvia” op Google zoekt en de Wikipedia-pagina opent, zul je verbaasd zijn hoeveel soorten van salvia er wel zijn. Het type salvia waar Instagram me voor uitscheldt heet Salvia Divinorum en dat heeft niets met mij te maken. Voor mij gaat het over Salvia Funerea, een hele mooie bloem die ook verwijst ook naar begrafenissen. Salvia Apiana is datgene dat je in brand steekt en de rook door de kamer wordt verspreid. Als je in spiritualiteit gelooft, kan de rook van helpen om de kamer te reinigen van negatieve energie. Een keer in Oekraïne, toen mijn keel pijn deed, schreef de dokter me voor om te gorgelen met een afkooksel van salvia. Er bestaat overigens een heerlijke thee van salvia! Maar ik heb er nooit aan gedacht om het met drugs te associëren. Ik dacht er pas over na toen Instagram mijn Instagram-profiel begon te blokkeren. Daarom wordt mijn bijnaam geschreven met twee i’s, Salviia dus!
Wat is je favoriete plaat aller tijden?
Ik denk dat het op dit moment Change van Deftones is. Het is een heel symbolisch voor mij, want het gaat over “I watched you change, like you never had wings and now you feel alive”, voor mij zijn dit heel belangrijke regels.
Je speelt binnenkort in Gent met Salvia je allereerste optreden tijdens de 10e verjaardag van Luminous Dash, wat kunnen de mensen verwachten?
Nicole: Mensen kunnen een interessante duistere sfeer verwachten, veel emoties, een beetje weirdness van mij, en natuurlijk duistere muziek. Ik wil een speciale sfeer creëren op deze dag.

Hello Nicole. You live now in Brussels and you have your own musical project Salvia, but you also had your own band when you were living in Ukraine. Can you tell us something about it and is there a great difference between them?
In Ukraine, my musical project was called PROKLYANA. The artist’s name itself meant something like “cursed”, so dark notes appeared in me a long time ago. I wrote rather depressive music, but sometimes I broke loose and not to dark tunes. The difference between PROKLYANA and SALVIA is primarily in the sound. Before, I wrote something with the sound of synthesizers, electronic music and less often something with guitars. Plus, I could sometimes call my genre “indie”. Before, Nikita, a sound producer with whom I prefer to work, helped me write almost every song. But when I started making Salvia, I learned a lot, and also found my sound and the genre changed. And of course, I started writing music on my own and using a guitar
Once you were in Belgium you started Salvia. How did that happen?
When I first came to Belgium, I initially thought that I would never be an artist again, because everything “mine” was in Ukraine, and here in Belgium I am essentially a nobody. But at some point I realized an important thing – I am a complete 0 and that is why “I can choose any number for myself.” That is, to create myself anew, with new experience and new emotions.
Were you aware of the fact that your musicians were people from The Haunted Youth and King Viktor?
For some time I was still hoping that I would continue to work on PROKLYANA (this project did not let me go for two more years after I arrived in Belgium, it was really hard to forget about the project that I had been creating since I was 15) – one day, when I was very sick and lay in my bed for 2 weeks, I realized that you need to be able to let go of the past, no matter how much I was attached to it. I had the idea to Create Salvia for a long time, but it was on that day that I finally decided to accept myself in a new way and start investing the maximum in Salvia.
Let’s be honest with all those members you can say Salvia is a super band, were you aware of the fact that these were people from The Haunted Youth and King Viktor?
I am really surprised that my talent was appreciated by such professionals, but for me it is a very good sign! It means that I am doing everything right, and what I write can really touch people. About The Haunted Youth – I’ll be honest, I had no idea what kind of band it was, so in fact, probably at the very beginning I perceived it differently than any other musician living in Belgium would have perceived it. But when I heard Tom and Nick play, and also when Arno from King Victor now played guitar instead of drums – I became incredibly happy that I work with such professionals!!!! It motivates me a lot to become better.
I read that your father was an undertaker and that you were surrounded by death. Has this influenced your music?
Yes, I grew up in a family that used to be in the Funeral Services business, and I think that really influenced my sense of aesthetics. You know, since childhood I have often seen coffins of different types, covered with different fabrics, wreaths decorated with different artificial flowers, monuments, or how differently these monuments are decorated around, all these funeral ribbons. I know how important it is, and in this way sometimes you can see how beautiful even such a thing as death can be, and seeing off a person to another world. This is also a kind of creativity and an important mission. So of course, this had a huge impact on my sense of aesthetics of themes “that are not usually talked about”. That’s probably why I can allow myself to raise in my songs things that people try not to talk about, but at least sometimes they definitely think about it.
I guess a lot of people will say you’re making goth, do you think Salvia is goth?
I can’t incline Salvia only to gothic. In my opinion Salvia can be very different! I don’t want to limit myself to one genre, I think that everything in this world is always changing, summer goes away, winter comes, and after winter comes spring. So my music can be so different that maybe in the future people might even be surprise. But at the moment – I really do something dark and depressive mostly. I make it so dark because that’s how I feel and that’s what I’ve experienced at this point in my life.
What is for sure is that you have an international sound which is guaranteed by the fact you’re playing at Left Of The Dial, so I guess you want to conquer Europe?
I definitely want to conquer Europe, ahahaha, but not with war. I want to conquer Europe with something that will give people the opportunity to feel those emotions that in Europe it is sometimes customary to hide behind a smile. This is normal, but still, each person is unique even in their sadness. It’s just that some emotions are taboo, so let Salvia sometimes be a place where you can feel pain and sadness, to understand it and cope with it, but at the same time not be judged by society for your “not smiling”.
Do you think Salvia can mean something in Ukraine?
I’m not completely sure that Salvia will be very popular in Ukraine or any other Slavic countries. It’s a paradox – my sound is relatively Slavic to be of interest to Europeans, but it seems to me that at the same time it is not Slavic enough to be liked by Ukraine. But I don’t miss the idea that Ukrainians might just be happy with the fact that SALVIA was created by a Ukrainian woman, and that would be enough for me even if they don’t like my songs much, ahahaha
Of course a lot of people know you from De Nieuwe Lichting, how was it to be part of that contest and have you learned a lot from it?
At first I didn’t understand how big this competition is for Belgium, I really don’t understand what is considered popular here and what is not, but I’m working on it and getting educated in this regard! So of course for me it was just “I sent a song, let’s see what comes out of it” Later they started explaining to me how cool it is, so I realized the scale and was very happy when they told me that I was in the 9 finalists. And I was a little upset that I wasn’t in the top 3 finalists, I probably didn’t have enough strength to interest people in voting. But for me it was still a very fateful experience, and no matter how you look at it – this competition was the very big step for Salvia
So far we only know the single Time, is this the typical Salvia-sound?
The song “Time” is not really the only sound for Salvia. As I said – I don’t want and can’t limit myself to one genre. I have a lot of different material that I want to share! But no matter how different it is – you always be able to hear that it is still in the style of SALVIA.
And why have you chosen for the name Salvia as it’s not the easiest name to use on Instagram or so.
Instagram is scolding me saying “this could be related to drug sales” But in fact, if you google “Salvia” and open the Wikipedia section, you will be surprised how many species and subspecies of Salvia there are.The very type of salvia that Instagram scolds me for is called Salvia Divinorum. I don’t consider myself with this one. I consider myself to Salvia Funerea – a very beautiful flower, and also refers to “funerals” also Salvia Apiana is that you usually set on fire and the smoke is spread around the room. If you believe in spirituality, the smoke of this sage can help cleanse the room of negative energy. Once in Ukraine, when my throat started to hurt, the doctor prescribed me to gargle with a decoction of Salvia. Also symbolic – I am a vocalist after all. There is also a delicious tea made from Salvia! In general, I put all the most natural and mystical into it! But I never thought to associate it with drugs. I thought about it only after Instagram started blocking my Instagram profile. That is why my nickname is written with two “i”- Salviia
What’s your favourite record of all time and why?
I think right now it’s Deftones’ song – Change. It’s a very symbolic moment for me, because it says “I watched you change” and “like you never had wings” and “now you feel alive” – for me these are very important lines.
You soon will play in Ghent you very first gig during the 10th birthday of Luminous Dash, what can people expect?
People can expect an interesting dark mood, alot of emotions, a bit of weirdness from me, and of course dark vibe music. I want to create a special atmosphere on this day.
