Even voor de jaarwisseling verscheen Arrow, Four van Bobbi Lu. Lucy Ryan is ondertussen een vaste waarde geworden op de Belgische podia en ondanks de drukke agenda vond de Britse wat tijd voor een babbel met Luminous Dash.
Waarom werd Lucy Ryan Bobbi Lu?
Lucy: Bobbi Lu is gewoon een bijnaam die sommige van mijn broers me gaven, dus ik heb het van hen gepikt!
Je woont in Brugge, maar je bent Brits. Ik hoor echt wel een internationaal geluid in je muziek.
Het zou heel leuk zijn om meer in andere landen te spelen, vooral in mijn thuisland. Ik had reeds het geluk om al op The Great Escape in Brighton te spelen, wat één van mijn favoriete steden is.
Vorig jaar heb je je debuut Arrow, Four, uitgebracht. Een heel persoonlijk album?
Dit album is in een periode van een paar jaar gemaakt, ik heb het gevoel dat ik de afgelopen jaren veel heb geleerd over hoe je muziek maakt en hoe te werken met andere mensen, dus het voelt aan als een mooi samenkomen van dit alles.
Ik las dat het album gebaseerd is op het boek Future Shock van Alvin Toffler, en dat het in feite over de angst voor de toekomst gaat.
Ja, het is geïnspireerd door een aantal elementen uit zijn boek. Ik denk dat ik al vanaf mijn tienerjaren, toen de eerste smartphone beschikbaar was, bang werd dat alles zo snel zou veranderen dat ik het niet zou kunnen bijbenen. Misschien was het maken van deze plaat een manier om dat onder controle te krijgen.
Soms heb ik de neiging om je muziek te omschrijven als dansmuziek voor mensen die besluiten om thuis te blijven.
Ja, ik hou wel van deze omschrijving.
Af en toe hoor ik een cynische draai in je muziek.
Ik heb inderdaad de neiging om cynisch te zijn, vooral als ik kijk naar dingen die ver weg gebeuren, maar ik probeer dat toch minder te zijn. Er is ook veel oprechte goedheid om ons heen, vooral dichtbij dan.
Ik heb ergens gelezen dat al je liedjes in feite gebaseerd zijn op klassieke composities die je op de piano maakt. Is dat zo en waarom werk je op die manier?
Nee, dat is niet waar hoor. Het merendeel van mijn nummers beginnen met gitaar of door wat te rommelen op mijn laptop. Of Metapwhore bijvoorbeeld, dat begon met de bassynthpatch.
Je zit bij Mayway Records, één van de grotere platenmaatschappijen van België. Ik neem aan dat dit je gelukkig maakt en veel kansen creëert?
Mayway is heel goed voor me geweest.
Ik heb gemerkt dat er een verschillende is tussen Bobbi Lu op plaat en Bobbi Lu op het podium.
Ik ben echt blij met de liveset die we nu hebben. Ik denk dat het ook leuk is als de nummers live op een andere manier worden gespeeld dan op een plaat.

Bobbi Lu is just a nickname some of my brothers call me so I borrowed it from them
You are living in Bruges, but you’re British. I definitely hear an international sound in your music. I guess your goal is bigger than just conquering Belgium, how is it in other countries?
It would be really nice to play more in other countries, especially back home. I was lucky to already play at The Great Escape in Brighton which is one of my favourite cities
Last year you released your debut Arrow, Four. It seems like this is a very personal album. What does the album mean for you?
This album was made over a few years, I feel I learnt a lot in the past few years about making music and working with other people so it feels like a nice coming together of scattered songs.
I read that the album was in fact based on the book Future Shock by Alvin Toffler which is in fact of a fear of the future.
Yeah it was inspired by some elements of his book. I think from my teenage years when the first smartphone became available I had this fear that I wasn’t gonna be able to keep up with a rapidly changing World. Maybe making this record was a way of taking control of that.
Sometimes I tend to describe it as dance music for people who decide to stay home. Does that make sense?
Yes I like that description
From time to time I can hear a cynical twist in your music. Right?
I do tend to be cynical, especially when I look at things happening far away, but I’m trying to be less so. There’s a lot of genuine goodness around us too especially close by.
I somewhere read that all your songs are in fact based on classical compositions you create on the piano. Is that so and why do you work that way?
No that’s not true. Majority of my songs start with guitar or from messing around on my laptop. Or metapwhore for eg started with the bass synth patch.
You are signed on Mayway Records which is becoming – if not yet – the greatest record labels from Belgium. I guess this must make you happy and create a lot of opportunities, not?
Mayway have been really good to me.
I noticed that there is a different approach between Bobbi Lu on record and Bobbi Lu on stage. Agree on there?
I’m really happy with the live set we’ve now made. I think it’s also nice when songs live in a different way when they’re played live than on a record
