We hadden een gesprek met Xarah Dion, één van de populairste hedendaagse minimal synth-artiesten. Deze zomer kan je haar op W-Fest aan het werk zien!
Hallo Xarah, je bent een echte undergroundster, dus ik denk dat je je misschien eerst eens kan voorstellen!
Ik ben een muzikante en componiste uit Montreal. Ik doe er al meer dan tien jaar mijn muzikale ding, en ik heb meegewerkt aan een heleboel projecten. Dat gaat van progrock, Arabische muziek tot geïmproviseerde dingen.
Sinds 2014 heb ik me toegelegd op het synthwave / minimal wave genre en mijn twee lp’s Le Mal Nécessaire (2014) en Fugitive (2016) deden het goed, en ik was al veel in Europa.
Als kleintje sta je op W-Fest tussen iconen als Peter Hook en Front 242, daar moet je toch opgewonden van geraken?
W-Fest is een geweldige gelegenheid om artiesten uit de oude en nieuwe generatie te zien. Het is een echte eer om het podium met zo’n namen te mogen delen, vooral omdat het om artiesten gaat die een invloed op mij gehad hebben. Naast mijn zangcarrière, speel ik als dj ook allerlei spullen uit de jaren 80: elektronische muziek, post-punk en regelmatig klassiekers uit het industriële, synthwave of minimal wave-wereldje. Dus ja, het is zeker een droom dat ik op W-Fest kan spelen.
Je muziek wordt vaak als minimal omschreven en ik denk dat dit inderdaad zo is. Er komen zoveel goede spullen uit Canada tegenwoordig, Hélène van Hante vertelde me onlangs dat alle haar favoriete bands uit Canada lijken te komen. Hoe verklaar je dit?
Minimal betekent voor mij DIY-elektronische muziek, met disco-invloeden, maar het komt uit de underground en heeft vaak een subversieve en een linkse ideologische inhoud. Het leunt zeer dicht aan bij techno en punk, en er is ook een gemeenschap bij betrokken. Er zijn heel wat minimal bands in Montreal, omdat we een sterke traditie van kameraadschap hebben, er is in de underground een samenwerking en uitwisseling van muzikale ideeën. De meesten van ons hebben een verleden in de underground raves van toen.
Als we het over hedendaagse minimale synth hebben, denk ik meestal aan Wierd. Hoe belangrijk was dit label en heb je ooit één van die legendarische nachten in New York bezocht?
Ik heb nooit de kans gehad om zo’n legendarische Wierd-nacht in New York te bezoeken. Aan de andere kant werd ik sterk beïnvloed door van Xeno & Oaklander, Martial Canterel en Automelodi, die allemaal op dat label zaten. Ik heb het genoegen gehad om met hun verschillende keren het podium te mogen delen, en ik hou nog steeds van hun werk.
Je zit op het geweldige Visage Musique. Hoe is het om met hun te werken?
Visage Musique heeft me echt geholpen om mijn muziek te kunnen uitbrengen, voordat ik hun ontmoette deed ik alles alleen. Mijn eerste lp was op mijn eigen label en de livemuziek verliep via Zodiaque Musique, waarmee ik nu gebroken heb. Door te werken met Visage Musique kan ik me beter concentreren op de muziek. Hun steun is stimulerend, aangezien ik teamwerk altijd belangrijk heb gevonden.
Je muziek is dansbaar, maar er zit ook veel tristesse in. Beschouw je jezelf als een melancholisch persoon?Melancholie zit in mij sinds ik een tiener was, de bezoeker die je niet graag op bezoek hebt. Ik heb mijn eigen weg door het leven gezocht, en dus ook de uitdagingen en de kwesturen die dat teweeg brengt. Ik voel dat dansmuziek een goede manier is om je kwetsbaarheid met anderen te delen. Ik denk dat ik deze overgevoeligheid met andere artiesten deel en ik beschouw het eerder als een zege in plaats van iets storend.
Je speelde al in Europa, is dat anders dan in Canada?Europa is zeer gastvrij voor rondtrekkende artiesten. Dat is toch wat ik in de afgelopen jaren heb gevoeld, en het heeft mijn werk op professioneel en artistiek niveau tot op een zekere hoogte gebracht. Aangezien de roots van de muziek die ik maak uit Europa komt, benut ik elke kans die ik krijg om er te spelen. Ik voel dat ik mijn aanpak kan vernieuwen en ik ontmoet er steeds een publiek dat wil luisteren. De clubscène is niet veel anders dan die van Montreal, maar uiteraard leer ik meer als ik buiten mijn comfortzone kom.
Ik weet dat het een vreemde vraag is, maar toch ben ik geïntrigeerd door het antwoord. Wat betekent muziek voor jou?Muziek is een mooie manier om een onzichtbare wereld te verkennen, zonder dat je daar moet over nadenken. Je hebt wel je verstand ervoor nodig. Je brein kan op een ander niveau communiceren met de taal van de muziek. Die vreugde, die gretigheid om geluiden te delen en de luisterervaring te delen, dat is een onvervangbare emotie.
Zijn er acts op W-Festival die je absoluut wil zien?Ik kijk uit naar de muziek en het gezelschap van mijn vriendin Hélène, je weet wel Hante. Ik wil ook Anne Clark zien en ik zal Front 242 voor de eerste keer zien. Wat heb je liever op een festival: ijs, bier of friet?Al het bovenstaande samen alstublieft! Wat is je favoriete plaat aller tijden en waarom?Het is onmogelijk voor mij om deze vraag te beantwoorden, gewoon omdat ik een muziekmaniak ben… Met wie zou je 8 uur alleen in een lift willen zitten en wat zou je dan doen?Met mijn verloofde en wat we zouden doen, kun je wel raden… De laatste woorden…Hartelijk bedankt om me de gelegenheid te geven om me aan jullie lezers voor te stellen!

Hello Xarah, you are a real underground star, so I guess most of our readers don’t know, so introduce yourself.
I am a musician and composer based in Montreal, Canada, where I have been an integral presence in the music scene for over 10 years. I participated in an array of projects from prog rock, to arabic music and free form improv. Since 2014 I specialize in the synthwave/minimal wave genre. I have released two well received Lps Le Mal Nécessaire (2014) and Fugitive (2016) and have toured extensively in Europe.
An underground star which is between all those influential 80s act…from Peter Hook to Front 242…I guess you’re thrilled to play at W Fest?W-Fest is an incredible occasion to cross-pollinate with artists from the old and new generation. It is a true honor to share the stage with figures which I was strongly influenced by. As a side interest, I Dj 80s electronic and post-punk sounds and regularly play classics that have shaped the sound of industrial, synthwave, minimal wave etc It is somehow a dream come true to play W-Fest.
Your music is described as minimal and I guess that’s it. There’s so many good stuff coming from Canada, even Hélène from Hante said to me that all her favorite bands seem to come from Canada. How do you explain that?Minimal to me is a genre describing DIY electronic music, disco influenced but coming from the underground, with often subversive and leftfield ideology content. It is very close to techno and punk which are both community based. I believe there are many minimal wave bands in Montreal because we have a strong tradition of camaraderie, collaboration and exchange in the underground. Coming from the experience of artistic and DIY lofts, underground raves and community oriented festivals, we are a large group of musicians living for the transformative power of music.
When talking about contemporary minimal music, I mostly think of Wierd. How important was this label and have you ever visited one of those legendary nights? I have never had the chance to visit a legendary Wierd night in New York On the other hand I was heavily influenced by the works of Xeno & Oaklander, Martial Canterel and Automelodi which were all released on the label. I have had the pleasure to share the stage with them on various occasions and still follow their works avidly.
Anyway, you are on Visage Musique which is a superb label. How is it working with them?Visage Musique really helped to bring my music out as I used to work completely alone before meeting them. My first LP was self-released on my label and live music production company Zodiaque Musique which I am now taking a break from. So by working with Visage, I can concentrate better on the music. Having their support is stimulating as I have always been at ease with team work.
Your music is danceable, but also with a lot of tristesse. Do you consider yourself as a melancholic person?I have lived with melancholy since a teenager, this un-welcomed visitor. I have navigated through life on my own terms despite the challenges brought by this vulnerability. I feel dance music is a great way to share one’s vulnerability in power and communion. I think I share this hypersensitivity with other artists and consider it a gift rather than a disorder.
You already played in Europe? How was it and is it different with the Canadian club scene?Europe is a fertile and welcoming ground for touring artists. The reception I have had in the last years definitely informed my work on both a professional and artistic level. Since the music I produce has most of its roots in Europe, every time I have the chance to perform I feel I can renew my approach and meet people who are avid and informed listeners. The club scene is not much different in Montreal but obviously I learn much more by working outside my local ground and zone of comfort.
I know it’s a strange question but I’m intrigued by its answer. What does music mean for you? Music is a beautiful means to explore the invisible and build worlds outside of reason but with the help of reason. The psyche can communicate on a different level with the language of music. That joy, that eagerness of sharing sounds and sharing the listening experience is an irreplaceable emotion.
This summer you will be playing at W-Fest in Belgium, I guess you’re looking forward to that?
As mentioned earlier, it is a true pleasure for me to partake in such an important festival in the heart of Belgium, sharing time and space with legendary acts.
Any acts you want to see yourself at W-Festival?I am looking forward enjoying the music and company of my friend Hélène aka Hante. I am also excited to see the great Anne Clark and the celebrated Front 242 for the first time.
What do you prefer on a festival : ice cream, beer or French fries?All of the above please!
What is your favorite record of all time and please state why. It is impossible for me to answer this question as I am a complete music maniac…
