Deze zomer verwelkomt W-Fest Anne Clark op zijn festival, de artieste die met Our Darkness en zo veel meer een new-wavegeneratie zijn soundtrack gaf om tot ’s morgen vroeg te fuiven, en op andere momenten weer weg te dromen. Wij hadden een praatje met het icoon.
Hallo Anne, vorig jaar zei je dat je zou stoppen met live shows, maar het lijkt wel of de aantrekkingskracht van het podium te sterk voor je is, want we zien je deze zomer op W-Fest. Zal dit uw laatste tour zijn of kan dat nog veranderen?
Hallo Didier! Het is genoegen om met je te praten… Het podium is mijn thuis! Maar soms dwingen de gebeurtenissen en de omstandigheden me om dit te veranderen. Gezondheidsproblemen en de voortdurende strijd die de ‘industrie’ vergt, maken het voor mij onmogelijk om te blijven werken op dit moment. Ik hoop dat het zal veranderen. Na de gebeurtenissen van vorig jaar, verschuldigd ik mij tegenover mijn echte Belgische fans op W-Fest en daarom ben ik er graag in augustus bij. Ik kijk er erg naar uit!
Je hebt toch een speciale relatie met België. Wat is jouw idee over ons land?
Ik woon er niet – maar ik heb er veel tijd doorgebracht en heb een zeer speciale relatie met België. Heel mijn leven lang. Mijn oudste familievrienden komen uit Wallonië. Mijn eerste concerten buiten het Verenigd Koninkrijk waren in Gent, Antwerpen, enz. …. Mijn beste vrienden zijn Belgisch. Ik kwam uit het vrij flauwe en stoere Engeland, en toen ik als een kind met mijn ouders België bezocht, ontdekte ik het sensuele genot van eten en drinken, de architectuur van de steden Gent en Brugge, de muziek en de poëzie van Jacques Brel, de cultuur van de strips, de algemene vreugde van het leven dat leek te overwinnen, de warme vriendelijkheid van de mensen – ze hebben allemaal een enorme indruk op mij gemaakt. (Ik lijkt wel te werken voor het toerisme voor België! (lacht)
Als je over Groot-Brittannië spreekt, dan klink je heel boos over de Brexit. Verandert dit veel voor artiesten?
Ik begrijp niet wat “Brexit” betekent! Niet alleen voor mij, niet alleen voor artiesten, maar voor iedere persoon! Deze onwetende, arrogante daad brengt en zal veel schade berokkenen. En laten we duidelijk zijn – het zijn meestal de Engelsen die dit hebben gewild. Door mijn gebrek aan solidariteit met onze Europese familie voel ik me gekwetst. In tijden van grote uitdagingen en demografische verschuivingen moet Europa meer verenigd dan ooit zijn – en de “Brexit” is gewoon een weg terug, het enige alternatief dat dit biedt is een middelvinger. Ik schaam me.
Velen zien jou als een new wave-icoon, en dat ben je zeker, maar in je carrière heb je veel verschillende dingen gemaakt. Welke albums betekenen het meeste voor jou?
Oh, dat is lastig om op te antwoorden! Al mijn werk vertegenwoordigt significante en verschillende delen van mijn leven. Ik doe mijn ding en heb mijn ding voor bijna 40 (?!?!) jaar gedaan en in die tijd zijn er heel wat verschillende genres geweest. Inderdaad, punk en new wave waren een belangrijk element daarvan, maar ik hou ook van klassiek, jazz en rootsmuziek en de filosofieën en ideeën achter deze stijlen. Met mijn werk probeerde ik mensen samen te brengen, om nieuwsgierig naar elkaar te zijn. Neem en geef invloeden en ideeën. Maar echt, ik heb geen bepaald album dat meer voor mij betekent. Zij betekenen allemaal iets voor mij.
Je bent tevens een dichteres. Wat komt er eerst, de muziek of de teksten?
Dat hangt ervan af. Soms zijn het de woorden, soms is het een muzikaal idee. Ik vind het leuk om met anderen te werken, dus soms komen soms zij met een idee naar me of ga ik naar hun toe.
Hoe begon je samenwerking met herrB?
Ik ontmoette herrB via het fantastische internet! Het bracht zo vele mogelijkheden, niet alleen voor muzikanten en artiesten. Ik kwam op zijn Soundcloud-pagina terecht en vond het ongelooflijk wat hij aan het doen was. Mensen hadden me al zo lang gevraagd om terug te keren naar het concept van een elektronisch duo en het leek me wat. Op dit punt in mijn leven is het niet alleen belangrijk om samen te werken met mensen op professioneel niveau, maar ook op maatschappelijk niveau en we hadden meteen een goede band met elkaar.
In feite, met wie zou het een droom zijn om wat muziek te maken?
Nou, David Bowie zou een droom geweest zijn, net als Tim Buckley …. maar voor degenen die nog onder ons zijn, zou ik het zeker niet erg vinden om een project te overwegen met de geweldige Zuid-Afrikaanse gitarist Derek Gripper
Je bent een kunstenares die iets te vertellen heeft. Wat vind je van de huidige muziekscène en naar welke bands of artiesten luister je nu?
Ik ben niet echt thuis in populaire muziek. Ik hou van muziek voor zijn diepte en levensduur. Het kan actuele muziek zijn of iets van 500 jaar geleden. Het moet een metgezel zijn in goede en slechte tijden. Wat de huidige bands betreft, ben ik meer in componisten zoals Olafur Arnalds, Nils Frahm, Ben Lukas Boysen en Derek Gripper, wiens werk ik aanbid. De hele manier waarop we muziek behandelen is de afgelopen jaren zo veel veranderd. Het is best geweldig. Ik heb altijd de meest obscure en experimentele kunstenaars uitgezocht. Dat was soms een uitdaging. Nu kan je met slechts een muisklik de meest verre en fantastische geluiden ontdekken. Ik hou daarvan!

Iedereen! (lacht). Ik wil weten wat Desireless vandaag doet!
Wat heb je liever op een festival: ijs, bier of friet?
Komaan zeg! Wat een ongezonde keuze ! In dit geval moeten het Belgische frietjes zijn …… en een lekker glas gekoelde witte wijn! (lacht)

Hello Anne, last year you said you would stop doing live shows, but it seems like the stage has too much attraction as you’re back on W-Fest. Will this be your last tour or can it change?
Hello Didier! A pleasure to speak with you…… The stage is my home! But sometimes events and circumstances force us to move. Health issues and continued struggles with the “industry” make it impossible for me to tour and work at the moment. I hope it will change. After events last year, I owe my true Belgian supporters this appearance at W-Fest and that is why I am taking part in August. I am very much looking forward to it!
You have a special relationship with Belgium as you live here. What’s your idea about Belgium?
I don’t live there – but I do spend a lot of time there and I do have a very special relationship with Belgium. I have had all my life. My oldest family friends are from Wallonie. My first concerts outside of the UK were in Gent, Antwerp etc….My best friends are Belgian. Coming from a rather bland and austere England, visiting Belgium as a child with my parents,discovering all those sensual pleasures of food and drink, the architecture of the cities of Gent and Brugge, the music and poetry of Jacques Brel, the culture of comics and animation, the general joy of being alive that seemed to prevail, the warm friendliness of the people – they all made a huge impression on me. (I sound like a Belgium Tourism promo! (laughs)
Talking about Britain, you were quite upset about the Brexit. Does this change a lot for artists?
I can’t begin to express here what “Brexit” means! Not just for me. Not just for artists. For every single person! This ignorant, arrogant act has done and will continue to do more damage than anything I thought possible from the selfish mentality of the English. And let’s be clear – it is mostly the English that have brought this about. I am sickened to my core by this lack of solidarity with our European family. In these times of such huge challenges and demographic shifts, Europe needs to be more united than ever – and “Brexit” not only turns its back on that but offers only a middle finger as an alternative. I am ashamed.
Many see you as a new wave icon, which you surely are, but in your career you made a lot of different things. Which albums mean most to you?
Oh, that’s tricky to answer! All of my work represents significant and different parts of my life. I do my thing and have done my thing for nearly 40 (?!?!) years now and over that time have been pulled into various genres. Indeed, Punk and New Wave were a major element but I also love classical, jazz and roots music and the philosophies and ideas behind those styles. My work, if it is about anything at all, is about trying to bring people together. To be curious about each other. Take and give influences and ideas. So really, I have no particular album or albums that mean the most to me. They equally mean something to me.
You are a poet. What comes first, the music or the lyrics?
That depends. Sometimes the words, sometimes a musical idea. I like to work with other people, so sometimes they will come to me with an idea or I will approach them.
You know work with herrB, how does this collaboration started?
I met herrB through the wonderful internet! It has allowed so may possibilities to come about, not just for musicians and artists. I came across his Soundcloud page and enjoyed what he was doing. People had been asking me for such a long time to return to a kind of electronic duo idea and the moment seemed right. At this point in my life it is important to not only collaborate with people on a professional level but also on a social level and we immediately had a great connection between each other.
In fact, with who would it be a dream to make some music with?
Well….David Bowie would have been a dream…..as would Tim Buckley….as for those still with us, I certainly wouldn’t mind considering a project with the amazing South African-guitarist, Derek Gripper
In fact you are an artist who has something to tell. What do you think of the current music scene and which bands or artist are you listening to these days?
I’m not really into music as a fashion. I’m into music for its depth and longevity. It can be current or it can be music from 500 years ago. It should be a companion in our lives through good and bad times. As for current bands I am a bit out of touch. I’m more into composers such as Olafur Arnalds, Nils Frahm, Ben Lukas Boysen and Derek Gripper, whose work I adore. The whole way we receive and handle music has changed so much in the past few years. It is quite amazing. I have always sought out the most obscure and experimental of artists. That used to be quite a challenge sometimes. Now, with just a click I can discover the most distant and amazing worlds of sound. I love that!

What do you prefer on a festival : ice cream, beer or French fries ?
OMG! What an unhealthy choice!! In this case it has to be the Belgian frietjes …… and a delicious glass of chilled white wine! (laughs)
What is your favorite record of all time and please state why.
