Waar komt jullie bandnaam vandaan?

Katia: Ik! HaHaHa. Alles en niets! Eden? Een oase? De Alibaba-grot!
Fabrice: Zo’n vraag doet me denken aan Blauwbaard. Je hebt me laten schrikken!

ENGLISH VERSION
Somewhere between an old factory hall, a broken synthesizer, and an alien radio wave, Miss Tetanos starts to vibrate. Not music that neatly sits in a box waiting for someone to stick a label on it, but an electronic life form that constantly reinvents itself.
On October 24, the machines are allowed to warm up again at the tenth edition of Indietronic Fest. So, it is time to extend the antennas and ask Katia Andina Kermaire (theremin, vocals) and Fabrice Dion (synths, vocals) where that electronic fever comes from.

When does music begin for you? With a melody, a rhythm, a sound, or with an idea that isn’t actually musical at all?
K : For me, the music can begin with a good noise or rhythm. Often, Fabrice proposes to me a base of synthesizer, or bass, or drum kick, or just 3 notes. After, we develop them in repetition, like a big alap.

F: We experiment the four, It can start with one of the four propositions. It depend of the moment, sometimes we improvise totally on the nothingness and nothing comes J , then we use something else to help, we’ll add a rhythm, and the first call for something else, but meanwhile it’s the music that decides. We don’t have magical formule to work, we try on different ways and all the four are good to build.

Katia, you play the theremin without literally touching the instrument. Is that liberating, or actually frustrating because one small movement can make the difference between magic and total chaos?
K: It’s a liberation but it’s true that sometimes I’d like to get moving or dance on the stage, but i can’t. I must stay concentrated on my movements.

The theremin seems almost the opposite of EBM: floating, elusive, and ghostly as opposed to tight and mechanical. Why does that combination work so well?
K: I think it’s that opposition that creates the contrast. The floating is like a trip above the rhythm. Like you dream in a train.

Your music is quite repetitive. When does repetition become hypnotic and when does it just become annoying?
F : It becomes annoying when you are pressed by time, when you have better things to do,  then  sixteen bars of repetition is already too much J You have to take some time to feel the time of others, it’s a matter of individual perception of time. It becomes hypnotic with the repetition but also when the notes from the various instruments create harmonics that don’t depend of each, Then our brain free us from the notion of clock time …

K: This question is more for the public. People can decide now it’s boring. But for us, if we think “it’s annoying”, we work again or put it in the cemetery of waves. Sometimes in the hypnotic repetition of notes, you find some magicals moments and your brain creates new notes or ghost notes that didn’t exist before.

You have tracks with titles like “Many offices for rent in Bruges” and “Plopsalad”. How important is absurdity to you? Does a song sometimes start with a completely idiotic idea?
K: HaHaHa. Yes! We like absurdity and to laugh. And yes, sometimes a song can begin with a sentence or an idiotic idea, then we sing in a car on tour.or in a kitsch situation.

Fa : Yes, absurdity have a significant rôle in life, we can find it easily everywhere, so, Why let it there alone ?  It’s important also to make music more funny,. At the beginning we start with a sound or a sentence that it was funny but after working on, it takes meaning, some sounds become ready for music … And we make music with. J We are also a bit stupid.

Ps : To get back to the offices: there really are alot of offices for rent in Bruges!

Suppose you had to hand over all computers, synthesizers, and effect pedals for one evening. Which two sounds from the real world would you take with you to the stage?

K : The noise of sea & the sound of freight train

F : On stage it would be difficult but i’d try to bring the sound of rain, it’s already music, and the sound of fallen leaves. I know that nobody cares in the contexte of this interview but Automn is my favorite season. If i can bring a third, instead of the dead leaves, that would also be the sound of wipers, it’s not a sound of the real world, but they makes good music too.

Where does your band name come from?
K:  My name was found by a friend when I was D.J (techno.), a long time ago, after  I began to play with Fabrice the name was ‘Miss Tetanos Und Sri.Fa’. But all the programmers askes us: “It’s too long to write on a flyer, can i put just ‘Miss Tetanos’?”
A lot of friends call us ‘Miss Tetanos’… and we finish by just write my name.

If Miss Tetanos is a disease — and the name suggests so — what are the symptoms, and is there actually a cure?
K: Symptoms are muscles contractions and some fever! I can vaccinate you after the live, if you want. The potion is in my suitcase!
F : The cure is to listen Tetanos’ music … but, please note : this content is not a substitute for medical advice.

Indietronic Fest is celebrating its tenth anniversary. What can visitors expect from your performance?
K: We’ll play a 40min. live with a film projection about the rats assembly. It will be like a crossing, a noise trip at the boundary of  techno trans.
F : I hope we’ll have a great time all together and I wish a wonderful evening for the birthday !

Last question: suppose that after the performance in Lede, you find a mysterious door with only the words ‘DO NOT ENTER’ on it. Which of you two goes inside first? And who or what do you hope to find there?
K: Me ! HaHaHa. All & nothing!  Eden? An Oasis? The Alibaba Cavern !
F : A proposition like that makes me think to Bluebeard, It’s the dilem of curiosity, you want really see but sometimes you can find someting horrible. But in reality it’s the door for the musicians’ room you’re telling us. You scared me ! Well, we hope to find something to eat and drink there, that’s already very good.
